Metal Braces

Metal braces are built to last longer than other types of braces and usually do not require replacement. Most patients only need to wear metal braces for about a year, and they are likely to be covered by insurance.

To get braces, children are first examined by an orthodontist who will perform an oral exam and take X-rays. The orthodontist will also take physical or digital impressions of the child’s teeth.

When the braces are ready, the orthodontist will dry the child’s teeth, place the braces on the teeth, and bond them in place. Next, archwires will be placed through the bands to help push the teeth in the right direction.

Finally, elastics (rubber bands) are placed to hold the archwires to the brackets. Children have the option of selecting the color of their elastics, something colorful or transparent.

About every 4 to 8 weeks, the child will return to the office, and the orthodontist will tighten the archwires. At the very end of the treatment, the braces will be removed and the teeth will be polished.
